The Striking Gallery
The works' own museum: the dipping floor, the label archive, and the smallest fire-watching duty in the country.
Three rooms
What you will see
Room one
The dipping floor
The 1926 copper bath still runs. On tour days it runs slowly, for show and for safety. Ansa Kole demonstrates a full frame dip at 11:20 and 14:20, weather and candour permitting.
Room two
The label archive
Wall after wall of plates in drawer units built by Piet. Volunteers pull any label on request; the drawer index is a card index and will remain one.
Room three
The striking gallery
Four thousand matches struck in a glass case by visitors since 1979, each logged. The case's wall chart of first-strike successes stands at 98.6% and is occasionally taunted by tourists.
